In our ongoing mission to transform the landscape of school environments, we are working on the Healthy School Buildings (HSB) informational website and web app. Building on the foundation set by the PFT Healthy Schools Tracker, this new platform represents a significant leap forward in our ability to understand, report, and act on the “comprehensive” conditions of our school buildings. We will be concentrating on six (6) major elements:
1. Comprehensive School Building Profiles:
The HSB website will provide detailed profiles of school buildings, offering insights into their age, size, structure, and room types. This foundational information sets the stage for understanding the unique challenges each school faces due to its physical characteristics.
2. People Variables:
A school is more than just its infrastructure; it’s about the people within. Our platform will feature data on the number of students and staff, along with critical demographics like race, age, grade level, economic status, and health indicators like asthma prevalence. This human-centric data is vital in tailoring solutions to the specific needs of each school community.
3. Condition Ratings of Building Systems:
We will provide detailed condition ratings for major building systems and components, including roofing, windows, interior finishes, and essential services like HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems. Understanding the state of these components is crucial in prioritizing repairs and upgrades.
4. Identifying Contaminants and Pollutants:
Our platform will not shy away from highlighting the presence of harmful contaminants like asbestos, lead, and mold. This transparency is key to ensuring that these health risks are addressed promptly and effectively.
5. Environment and Air Quality Analysis:
Air quality greatly impacts the health and learning environment in schools. We will feature data on CO2 levels, temperature, humidity, noise, and lighting – all factors that contribute to a conducive learning environment.
6. Construction Impact Reporting:
Finally, we recognize the importance of monitoring the effects of ongoing construction, renovation, and modernization activities. This section will focus on tracking these activities to minimize their impact on school occupants.
The Role of Stakeholders:
While this platform will aggregate and present a wealth of data, its success hinges on the active participation of you – school stakeholders. Teachers, other school staff, unions, parents, and community members are invited to not only review the information provided but to contribute to it. Your lived experiences, observations, and voice are invaluable in ensuring the accuracy and completeness of our data.
Conclusion:
The Healthy School Buildings web platform is more than a tool; it’s a community-driven movement to bring about real change in our schools. We invite you to join us in this journey, to share your experiences, and to help us paint a complete and accurate picture of the conditions in Philadelphia’s schools. Together, we can ensure that our schools are safe, healthy, and conducive to learning for all.
