We believe that maintaining school facilities is simply the right thing to do: that adequate building conditions (ABCs) should be met in each and every school building so that students, faculty, and staff can spend their daytime hours in a space that is sufficiently safe to learn and work without worry.
Unfortunately, facility maintenance can sometimes take a backseat to things like student performance and test scores. In reality, though, these two issues aren’t separate problems—they’re intrinsically related. From deteriorating infrastructure to poor air quality, failing school facilities can have a profound effect on student performance—which is why it’s crucial to understand how these hazards can hinder our children’s education.
Let’s break down exactly why toxic facilities keep students from making the grade.
Physical Health and Well-being
One of the primary concerns with failing school buildings is the health and well-being of students. Asbestos, lead, mold, and other contaminants can pose serious risks to their physical health, and sick kids simply don’t learn as well as kids who are healthy. Moreover, exposure to these hazards can lead to long-term harmful effects that persist even after the students have graduated and left the school building behind, such as respiratory issues, allergies, and compromised ability to focus.
Distractions and Disruptions
Imagine trying to concentrate on a lesson while the sound of dripping water or the wheeze of malfunctioning HVAC system fills the classroom. Failing school buildings often come with a host of distractions and disruptions that hinder the learning process. Uncomfortable temperatures, poor lighting, and noisy surroundings can make it challenging for students to stay engaged and absorb information effectively. These distractions can lead to reduced attention spans, decreased participation, and lower academic performance.
Psychological Impact and Emotional Welfare
The impact of failing school buildings goes beyond physical health and distractions. The psychological well-being of students is also at stake. Dilapidated classrooms, broken facilities, and inadequate resources can create a sense of neglect and contribute to feelings of frustration and demotivation among students. A lack of pride in their learning environment can affect their self-esteem and overall attitude towards education. It’s crucial for students to feel valued and supported in a conducive learning environment that fosters positivity and growth.
Unfortunately, “failing” schools where academic performance is suffering can end up caught in a vicious cycle, punished for their poor test scores with reduced funding…and therefore too cash-strapped to make necessary repairs or sustain routine maintenance of facilities. The facilities continue to crumble, student performance continues to slip, and the cycle repeats.
It doesn’t have to be this way. By getting involved with the Campaign for ABCs, you can help ensure that the students in your community—as well as the teachers who teach them and the staff who cares for their buildings—have a safe, productive environment to learn in.t performance continues to slip, and the cycle repeats.
